ecosterity

The election draws ever closer and the parties are blending into a non-descript soup of centralist policy, with ugly croutons of anti immigrant sentiment floating around. For me the Greens are the most appetising, and it would be great to see them propose something mildly insane, like substituting austerity for ecosterity! Imagine, cutting government spending by reducing energy consumption rather than benefits!

Or better yet a program of renovation that sees every government building have solar panels installed on the extent of their roofs – even the Houses of Parliament! Reinstating the mining industry in Wales, not for coal or shale gas but for thermal energy.

But what I’d really like to see is a truly ambitious plan, like investing massively in space exploration with a view to strip mining the dark side of the moon for helium3, whilst driving research to make nuclear fusion using said material a reality. Okay, so we would horrifically scar another planet, but it’s the dark side, we never see it. Yes we would become international pariahs for flouting stellar law, but we would be leading the way in clean energy – that’s the kind of government I want.
